Amartya Sen

Posted on February 10, 2007 by V.Isvarmurti

What will be his legacy ?

Sen enjoys now a deservedly high reputation in the international economic expert circles. With more and more economists winning the Nobel Prizes in the subject the subject itself is changing so fast.  How Sen’s place in the economics discipline will be remembered?

May be his conceptualisation of the Human Development Index would keep his reputation. In sensitising poverty and poverty alleviation his name might survive.

As for his contribution to actual economic policy making in India,I am afraid  his impact  seems minimal. In fact, the sort of economic policies pursued by Dr.Manmohan Singh and his other senior economic expert colleagues are considered  the PM’s economic vision and policies are so out of tune with global realities.

They remind one  Keynes famous dictum:when men come to power they seem to remember  only the economics they studied in their young age!
