Education entrepreneurs make for rapid education growth!

Karnataka shows positive role models!

There has been rapid changes in the Indian education scenario. There are now highly dedicated education complexes where you can see a large number of education institutions under committed education leaders. These education leaders come from different backgrounds, many are Hindu and other religious leaders, mutt heads and they head a large number of education institutions, from elementary to large professional colleges, engineering and medical colleges. The one this magazine knew for long is in Gulbarga, under the Appa Sharanabasappa of the Basaveswara institutions. We had visited and took part in one of their convocations. We were greatly impressed by their ideals and the serene environment. In fact,we ran a story on their public school titled: A public school with an Indian philosophy.

Likewise,we have since then featured in the pages of our magazine,on cover pages,a number of Karnataka -based institutions that are run as models in charitable spirit, though they charge fees in accordance with the government stipulated ones. They qualify as education charities run with a non-profitable motive and yet they run these large education complexes on modern management lines, they are all built to international standards, staff very highly qualified and experienced. Some of them are almost brand names in their respective areas and fields of specialisation.

From the northern border of the State, from Belgaum to the southern end, from Mysore to other small towns,we have covered almost the entire geographical area of the state. What strikes us is the fact that in these days of so many malpractices, Karnataka instituions as well as the state government have evolved the CET that had turned Karnataka as the education destination for all India! As for professional education,be it engineering or medical colleges, there is almost a national unanimity that Karnataka institutions are giving the rest of the country as welcome, positive trend.High degree of transparency, high dedication and also high motivation to compete in terms of excellence.

The point is the time has come for Indian higher education to look out.To the outside world,to the coming of the foreign universities, the WTO opening higher education for free competition,we need a change in the mindset. What is it?We have to have a healthy attitude to think of higher education or any quality education as one that can be created only through a positive competitive spirit. This can be done only on the US and UK higher education models. There, in the West, there is this healthy attitude to make for private enterprise, private fund raising and create world class institutions and also ensure high degree of equity and equal access for all students who deserve higher education. This means pay for even the poor students who otherwise would be denied entry into first class universities. This is the trend in Harvard,Stanford,Yale and elsewhere. So too in Oxford,Cambridge. So why not India? We congratulate the Karnataka education stalwarts, all well-known public names, for their nation -building work, service in the cause of India’s higher education sector..
