India is often described as an agricultural nation, yet agriculture rarely receives the level of serious policy attention it deserves. This talk reflects on the state of Indian agriculture and argues that the sector needs clear priorities, long-term thinking, and practical solutions.
Shri V. Isvarmurti questions whether public discussions have become overly focused on fashionable themes such as organic farming, while neglecting broader structural issues affecting farmers, productivity, markets, and agricultural development. He also discusses the paradox of celebrating fertiliser imports from dozens of countries while failing to build a stronger and more self-reliant agricultural ecosystem. Drawing on more than three decades of publishing agricultural magazines and interacting with farmers, researchers, policymakers, and agribusiness professionals, he shares his perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing Indian agriculture today.
